Despite Shrinking Reserves And Rising Prices, Oil Isn't Going Anywhere
Charles Maxwell: There are a number companies in the areas of minerals, organic chemicals, oil and gas, coal and nuclear energy that are reporting, these days, that the long-term supplies of these commodities are definitely being affected by the heavy demands from the world economy of the last 20 years. We are already seeing certain isolated cases where environmental factors are intervening and causing a slowing in mine or field production gains — not because extraction cannot physically be accomplished but rather because people are arranging themselves politically against continued expansion.
This is particularly cogent in the oil and gas business. We’ve heard a lot recently about shale gas, and it is a new, exceedingly useful expansion area. But we’ve also heard about hydraulic fracking and we’ve heard a great deal about risks of earthquakes, and so on. So there is a backlash that’s occurring which is limiting the acceleration of shale gas.
Wallace Forbes: Because of environmental concerns?
Maxwell: Yes. But not out of geologic supply concerns. Shale gas is fresh and exciting. There are large areas in the United States that still have to be developed. There has been some disappointment that the shale story has not worked out equally well in Poland, Hungary, South Germany or Austria, but the worldwide exploration effort in shale is just starting.
The crux of the problem seems to be that although European gas is of good quality, it tends not to have so many “sweet spots,” where gas is concentrated and prolific, and therefore inexpensive to produce.. In the US, we can often obtain gas for $3-$4 per 1000 cubic feet. But I believe that most of the discoveries in Europe have been made in the range of $6-$10 per 1000 cubic feet.
Forbes: So in other words, there’s been some disappointment in the cost of developing these fields in Europe, rather than politics or environmental concerns being the limiting factor?
Maxwell: Yes, that is fair. In Europe’s case, one would say that they probably have good reserves. But we will need a higher price before it will be economically viable to develop many of these fields.
Turning to oil, it is still the largest single fuel in the world. About 37% of all energy used is in the form of products derived from crude oil. The next largest is coal at around 23% and gas at around 23% of the total. So oil stands out quite notably from the other competitive fuels.
