It seems like it has been too long in coming, but reports the past couple of weeks indicate that flounder fishing in the southern Chesapeake Bay finally is what it should be this time of year.
So far this year, 58 fish topping the 7 pounds or 26 inches needed for an award from the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament have been registered with the state-run program - with a few topping double digits in weight.
In South Hampton Roads, flounder fishing is rivaled only by striped bass for its economic impact. Anglers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on catching flatties.
There are lots of reasons for the appeal, the most obvious being that flounder are a favorite for the dinner table. Fried, broiled, grilled - stuffed with crab meat - it's all hard to beat.
Anglers can work a variety of baits for flounder. A favorite is a "flatfish sandwich" consisting of a strip of cut squid teamed with a live gudgeon or finger mullet. These baits often are rigged on any number of elaborately colored set-ups with spinners.
Anglers also work jigs and bucktails for big flounder.

My wife and I went out of town for two days. On the way back we stopped at the Seagull fishing pier on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to see what kind of action there was. There were plenty of people yesterday evening giving it a try, I saw a couple of skates, whiting, spade fish, crabs and croaker caught while I was there. It is pretty rare for me to be on a pier, most of the time I am under the bridge on my jet ski. Here are a couple of pictures I took last night.
