GUARDING AGAINST FUTURE AIRPORT CLOSURES Chamber Of Commerce Weighs In
That was when four of the certified Air Traffic Controllers reported sick thus effectively resulting in the closure of the airport from 2.00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, and all day Monday. It reopened on Tuesday at 9 a.m. and closed at 3.00 p.m. and is continuing to function.When the airport closed on Sunday, it left many travellers booked on outgoing on incoming flights stranded. Among them in Anguilla were teachers travelling to Barbados and Trinidad to mark CXC papers as well as others who were going to other places including England and the United States on connecting flights. On that day, also, four executive jets were expected in Anguilla and on arrival some of them were seen circling the closed airport.
So far there has not been any real explanation to clear up all of the sick reports. A presss release from the Anguilla Air & Sea Ports Authority (AASPA) stated in in part: "The closure was the result of the inability to provide the regulatory cover in the air traffic control tower as a result of the ill health of four certified Air Traffic Controllers (ATC).
The Airport has been operating on a skeleton staff for some months now, due to long absence of two ATC staff whose certification has been suspended."
While the Air & Sea Ports Authority struggled to keep the airport functioning after its reopening on Tuesday, it announced that it was “awaiting approval of the Regulations in UK to implement an agreement with Princess Juliana Airport [in St. Maarten] to allow air traffic control for Clayton J. Lloyd Airport to be managed by Princess Juliana Airport until Thursday.” The release also explained: "Once approved it is anticipated that an agreement will be formalised with PJA in the near future making this the default procedure whenever ATC cover is lost."
The press release continued: “In the meantime, the Anguilla Air & Sea Ports Authorityis now awaiting the necessary documentation from three Air Traffic Controllers recruited regionally. Once on island, we expect full certification within two months. In the long-term, two school leavers were recently recruited as trainees and are expected to begin formal training in September.
“The Board of the AASPA regrets any inconvenience the closure may have caused.”
As the airport remained closed on Monday, the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a press conference.
