Cary Unveils Newest Water Conservation Tool: An Online, Interactive Game That ...

(Media-Newswire.com) - CARY, NC –  From tuna cans to animated rain gauges, the Town of Cary has a history of finding innovative ways to get citizens involved in using water wisely, and this summer is no exception as the Town launches its first online game, “Don’t Drown the Ground.”  The program pits an overactive sprinkler against a Yard Guard who, with the help of the user, throws life rings to drowning ladybugs; with each rescue, water conservation tools and tips are accumulated while the bug-and-yard-drowning water level drops.  At the end, users can go directly to the Town’s water conservation web section for more information about saving water, both outdoors and in. 

“Rather than spending money on yet another postcard reminder, we thought our customers would appreciate spending a lot less on something that really gets their attention with a lot of information in a much more fun environment,” said Marie Cefalo, Conservation Program Supervisor.  “Unlike a one-time postcard, the game can be played – and learning can take place – over and over again, and all for about 30 percent less than the cost of mailing a card,” 

Since beginning its water conservation program in 1996, the Town’s residential per capita water consumption has been reduced by 13 percent, from 75 gallons per person per day to 65 gallons per person per day.  This type of reduction helps postpone the need to expand costly infrastructure like the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant, which has a maximum treatment capacity of 40 million gallons of water per day.

Cary’s Beat the Peak campaign is the annual summer water conservation initiative by the Town to educate its utility customers about outdoor water conservation through vehicles such as the Town’s website, Block Leaders, media relations, advertising, WaterWise Workshops and promotional items. The Beat the Peak campaign serves as a reminder of the Town’s three, year-round watering ordinances, including: Alternate Day Watering, Water Waste and Rain Sensor ordinances. The Alternate Day Watering Ordinance enables customers to use automatic irrigation systems or hoses and sprinklers three specified days per week. As part of the water waste ordinance, residents are not permitted to over water their landscaping, thereby limiting runoff into storm drains and into the street.
