Editor's Note: Eli's back in Door County, and ice cream all around
The return of Door County's "piano man" for a local concert highlights a list of events coming in the next week across the Peninsula.
Topping the list, Eli Mattson joins the Woodwalk Concert Series for a show at 7 p.m. Friday at Woodwalk Gallery.
Mattson was well-known on the Peninsula, singing in coffee shops, bars and theaters in the area, before the rest of the country discovered his passionate vocals and piano work in 2008 on the hit NBC-TV show "America's Got Talent," where viewers voted him all the way to the final round of competition and he finished as runner-up. He wowed the judges with his cover of Mark Cohn's "Walking in Memphis" and followed up with Elton John hits, "Your Song" and "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," along with songs by Alicia Keys, Tony Rich and Phil Collins ("Against All Odds").
Since then, Mattson has brought his show across the country, playing Carnegie Hall in New York, Las Vegas hotels and casino gigs. The Woodwalk concert is an intimate solo show, but Mattson has assembled a band and written material for an album he plans to start recording this summer. Friday's concert goers get to hear some of the new songs.
The Eli Mattson concert is in the Events Barn at Woodwalk Gallery, 6746 County G, one mile off Wisconsin 42, south of Egg Harbor. Tickets cost $15 at the door or in advance for general admission; reserved tickets must be picked up by 6:30 the night of the show. Concert goers are invited to arrive early to peruse the art of gallery owner Margaret Lockwood and 47 other regional artists. Beer, soda and ice cream treats will be available for purchase.

One ice cream social is Sunday afternoon at Crossroads at Big Creek, as part of a quilt show. The Door County Historical Society holds the social in the Historical Village at Crossroads, with proceeds going to village maintenance. » The Sister Bay Historical Society holds its annual ice cream social from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Koessl Barn at the society's Corner of the Past Museum.
