University honoured for green energy

CHURCH POINT — Wind turbines, solar panels and a biomass burner on a Nova Scotia university campus have turned some heads right across the country.

Universite Sainte-Anne is a national award winner in the field of technological innovation because of the aggressive approach it took to finding renewable energy sources.

The francophone university’s energy projects have caught the attention of judges who examined entries from a prestigious group of 24 universities vying for recognition from the Canadian Association of University Business Officers for projects that improved campus or community life through technology or innovation.

The association handed out its quality and productivity awards earlier this month and University Sainte-Anne placed second, between first-place Carleton University and third-place McGill University.

"Since 2009 Universite Sainte-Anne has implemented three sources of renewable energy on its main campus in Church Point," said university president Allister Surette. "A solar thermal system for domestic hot water, a gasification biomass furnace and a 50-kilowatt wind turbine.

"We are proud to see that our commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection has been recognized by the (association) and we hope that many other institutions will adopt a similar approach."

A second wind turbine was installed earlier this year but is not yet spinning, said university spokeswoman Stephanie Navarro.

In 2008, the university consumed 511,596 litres of furnace oil. By 2010, oil consumption dropped to 157,243 litres, a saving of slightly more than $200,000, Navarro said. Carbon dioxide emissions from oil use were also reduced during the same period by 71.6 per cent.

"We can’t measure directly the effect of the solar panels but they are combined with the action of the furnace, which means they contribute to saving money on oil and wood chip expenses," Navarro said.

Universite Sainte-Anne will receive $2,500 and a plaque from the association.

Simple Furnace Troubleshooting and Repair Tips from Jonesboro ...

Jonesboro furnace repair specialists have compiled useful tips that will help homeowners to know how to deal with some of the most common types of furnace problems that they will likely encounter.

Furnace Ignition Problems

If you are using a gas or oil burning furnace, it will require some kind of gas in order to operate and function properly. In the event your furnace fails to ignite, you should first check if the gas valve is turned on, or you should try checking the main gas supply to see if it is properly connected to the furnace.

For electric powered furnaces, what you should do is to first turn off the thermostat then try turning it on again. By switching off the power of the furnace you will be able to reset the module for ignition control. In case you are using a furnace with a pilot light be sure that it is lit on. If not, check the instruction manual to know how to troubleshoot the problem. If you have done everything instructed in the manual but the problem persists, then it is time to call in the help of a qualified furnace repair specialist in Jonesboro .
