Christmas comes early in Seguin

SEGUIN — Anybody looking for homemade gift ideas has a chance to get some on Tuesday.

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Guadalupe County is holding its annual Christmas in July.

Family and Consumer Services Agent Amy Harris said the event comes when crafters begin gathering their thoughts.

“This is the time of year when people start thinking about what they are going to do or give for Christmas,” she said. “This gives participants ideas for making or sewing gifts for Christmas or any other type of gifts.”

Crafters will have a chance to see over a dozen ideas, Harris said.

“This year we will have 14 items to demonstrate,” she said. “We try to do a variety. We try to show things that haven’t been shown here before. We do a few sewing, handicrafts and some other types of crafts. Things that can be done for anytime of year, not necessarily Christmas.”

The variety extends to different levels of difficulty and within a budget, Harris said.

“We have easy items for beginners to things that are more difficult for the advanced crafters,” she said. “We also do items that help to keep the costs down.”

Christmas in July is a tradition that has a long history,  Harris said.

“This has been around for about 25-30 years and we typically have about 100 attendants,” she said.

Attendants will get more than just a couple of ideas, Harris said.

“There are also chances to win door prizes, including some of the work we display,” she said.

The event takes place Tuesday, July 19 at the Silver  Center and admission is $5 for one of two sessions — one from 2-4 p.m., the second from 6-8 p.m. — and includes the patterns that are being demonstrated.
