Touareg has all the tricks

Magicians surely concocted some of the devices on the Volkswagen Touareg.

You can even bring up a bird's-eye view of the car on the screen, which is handy for all sorts of reasons, as we'll discover.

Yet in trying to fathom how it works, you'll peer in vain for a camera hovering, helicopter-like, above the car.

The new model is also longer, lighter, faster, better looking, and more frugal and luxurious than the outgoing version.

For example, the likes of leather seats, an eight-speed auto and nine airbags are standard on the $62,990 entry model, a 150kW diesel.

Yet it's $2500 less than the barer prior model. You also get on-screen parking help, 17-inch alloys, a colour touchscreen, hands-free phone use, dual-zone air and lots of chrome.

Next in the range are a 180kW V6 diesel and a 206kW V6 petrol model, each at $77,990. These add 18-inch alloys, a premium Dynaudio system, sat-nav, nappa leather, electric seats and an auto tailgate.

At the pinnacle is the $82,990 4XMOTION, which has a 180kW diesel and serious off-roading aids - low-range gears and two electronic differential locks.

All models get a system that stops the engine at rest and automatically fires it up again. It contributes to the excellent 7.2-7.4L/100km fuel economy in the diesels and 10.1L/100km petrol. Towing capacity is 3500kg.

The fresh Touareg's svelte styling and generous appointments target higher- priced European rivals.

Made in the same Slovakia factory that puts together the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, the Touareg has access to some pretty snazzy kit that would cost a lot more on such brands.

With the Touareg, you start at $62,990 then add a reasonable $5400 extra for the driver assistance package, providing a suite of electronic wizardry:

Adaptive cruise control: Adjusts speed to the vehicle ahead.

Front assist: If a collision with the vehicle ahead is possible, warns the driver then primes and activates the brakes if necessary.

Lane assist: Helps to prevent drivers drifting out of their lane.

Occupant protection: When a potential accident is detected, the safety belts are tensioned and windows closed.

Side assist: Detects and warns of vehicles in the blind spot.

The bird's-eye-view feature adds $2500 to the base variant and $1100 to higher models:

Area view: Cameras in the tailgate, wing mirrors and grille transmit images of the surroundings to the screen.
