West Michigan fairs and festivals are in full swing

For many West Michigan residents, celebrating summer means high-tailing it to the beach at every hint of sunshine. However, the season also brings a plethora of festivals and fairs, and this is prime time.

This week alone: The Barry County and Berlin fairs kick off Monday, Fremont’s National Baby Food Festival starts Wednesday and the Ionia Free Fair gets under way Thursday.

The National Baby Food Festival once again will feature its ever-popular bed races, but organizers have put more of an overall emphasis of the four-day event on children.

Even the entertainment was chosen with children in mind, said Lina Strong, one of the festival’s coordinators.

“In the past, we’ve kind of gotten away from it, and this year it was something we felt we just really wanted to focus on,” Strong said.

The kid-friendly entertainment includes a performance by magician Gordon Russ, gymnastics and a comedy variety show by Joel Tacey. All family events are free. “Pull up a chair — there’s some bleachers there — sit down and watch,” Strong said.

Noise and speed are highlights of the Barry County Fair in Hastings. A motocross event and a demolition derby are two of the fair’s biggest draws. Auto hockey and lawn mower racing are popular events as well, said fair president Ron Tobias.

“It’s kind of a hub for summer activity. It’s kind of a place where a lot of people meet,” Tobias said. “If they want something entertaining, want it reasonable and want it close to home, you can’t beat it.”

While still family focused, one of the biggest local festivals of the summer — Grand Haven’s upcoming Coast Guard Festival — is attending to a different demographic this year — senior citizens.

“We are starting a senior day … we started looking at where the gaps were, and there wasn’t anything dedicated to them,” said Madonna Kramer, the festival’s director of marketing and fund development.

Senior events include a pickle ball tournament and a swim meet. All events are free for seniors.

“We have line-dancing lessons, we have free lunch. We have bingo with prizes, and we also have a free concert at Waterfront Stadium on Wednesday night,” Kramer said.

In addition, the festival boasts several key attractions just for kids, including a children’s parade a free circus.
