Off-road drivers banned near Easton Grey

Off-road drivers have been barred from a Roman settlement near Easton Grey damaged by their vehicles.

The Fosse Way at Whitewalls, between the B4040 and Foxley, has proved popular with 4x4 drivers whose vehicles have torn up parts of the byway and damaged the important archaeological site.

At the last Malmesbury Area Board meeting Adrian Hampton, head of local highways for Wiltshire Council, announced that a traffic order would be made banning motor vehicles from the byway to protect the site.

Concrete barriers, CCTV and information boards are to be installed. Barriers used previously were not effective.

After the meeting, Mr Hampton said: “It is a significant settlement and it is important it is protected. The site and its wildlife also are ecologically important.

“It is now an offence to use a 4x4 vehicle there and we want to encourage walkers, horse riders and tourists.”

John Thomson, Malmesbury Area Board chairman, said the new scheme was a joint effort between Wiltshire Council, the police, parish councils and English Heritage.

At the area board meeting councillors approved a grant of £4,386 towards the installation of gates, barriers and fencing.

Coun Thomson said: “Sadly this is another case of a few who have acted irresponsibly and spoiled it for others. We want to save the archaeological site and return it to a well used and beautiful valley.

Fourth, bring extras with you. Extra ropes, extra clothes, extra tools, and extra 4×4 auto parts. But not too many extras. Try to remember the things you needed or the parts that broke on your last trip. Chances are you would need them again or they would break again.

Lastly, don’t forget to have fun. Get your buddies to join you in your trip. Nothing’s more exciting than having people to share with your adventure.
