The Rise of Potter Mania

There are few things in our crowded world of the media who are also culturally unifying as the Harry Potter series.

For the millennial generation, there are difficulties in finding common ground with other emblematic of the way we are only children.

We "old" can crack a joke about a Brady Bunch episode, or make some oblique reference to Scooby Snacks and every American baby boomers will get.

No luck with today's children and even some of their parents. They have been fragmented by cable television and MP3 music downloads.

Then the rise of all things digital created a generation gap that has not been seen since the first days of rock'n'roll. Somehow, we have all been sent to a weird bubble of disconnectedness where the only place to find a niche kinship is on the internet with some guy named Rupert who, for all we know, might be anyone from a teenage ax murderer with a bad case of acne to a handsome businessman typing from his Hong Kong penthouse office. 

But then Harry Potter showed up.

The little wizard started gathering steam back when the first book came out. It was an instant hit with the intended target market of 10 year olds.

Then the franchise worked it's way up the age groups and now everyone, and I mean everybody, is into it.

This was a clandestine transition, though.

For awhile, adults wouldn't admit that they were interested. Moms would idly pick up the book while little Timmy was at soccer practice and devour the pages while standing behind the "Go Diego Go" lampshade. Then, they'd make sure the book was placed in the exact same position on the kid's desk, whistling softly as they exited the room with a laundry basket (their cover).

For some reason, these moms would organize the movie outing with other moms and spend entirly too much time making the Hogwarts scarf and intricate rolled up paper wands. If they mentioned to a friend that they liked the books, it was a play by play of subtle social interaction to see if there was approval or they would be shunned.

Obviously, they – and by “they” I mean “we” – were all hooked.

By the third movie, we were leaving the kids at home so we could go get a drink afterward and fawn over how cute Ron had become or lambast the director for leaving out the Fleur Delacour/Bill Weasley courtship or the Free the House Elves campaign. (You have to read the books if you want to know what I'm talking about.
