Macau: magic and marvellous

The centrepiece of Macau is its Historic Centre, a treasury of both Chinese and Portuguese architecture that has been listed on the Unesco World Heritage register since 2005. It encompasses more than 20 buildings and monuments, some of which are linked by a labyrinth of cobbled streets and alleyways. The juxtapositions can be startling. You’ll find Taoist temples hard up against 17th-century colonial fortifications, and baroque churches a few paces from traditional Chinese homes.

At the heart of the Historic Centre is Senado Square, flanked by stately 19th-century colonnades. Its zebra-striped paving and central fountain are among the most recognised symbols of Macau, and it serves as a meeting place for locals of all ages.

Not far away is the A-Ma Temple, the oldest building on the peninsula. Built in 1488 to honour the sea goddess Mazu, it’s an evocative warren of steep stairways, courtyards and chambers. For a sense of contrast, a call at the iconic 16th-century Ruins of St Paul’s is a must. The intricately carved stone facade, rich in Jesuit iconography, is almost all that remains of what was once Asia’s largest Catholic church.

Not all of Macau’s architectural showpieces speak from a previous age. The soaring Macau Tower warrants a visit for its amazing views over the Pearl River Delta from the 764ft observation deck. How you descend is up to you. The intrepid can take a 20-second plunge to ground level on the tethered “sky jump” – or if that’s not adventurous enough, experience a full five seconds of freefall at the end of a bungee cord!

An eye-poppingly spectacular building designed by IM Pei houses the Science Center. Its planetarium makes use of the world’s most advanced 3D projection techniques to delve into the mysteries of the universe.

Macau has an unusually diverse set of museums, celebrating just about every aspect of its culture. The Maritime Museum sits on the site where the first European settlers came ashore, while the Grand Prix Museum features the car in which Ayrton Senna was victorious on the city’s notoriously tricky circuit. The painstakingly restored Taipa Houses- Museum shows off the architectural splendour of the 1920s and the Macau Museum of Art has galleries dedicated to Chinese calligraphy, painting and ceramics.

Macau’s cultural diversity is also reflected in its shopping. The most notable international designer brands are represented in its shining malls but the city is also a treasure trove for Chinese antiques and collectibles. And it would be a shame to miss out on the bustling open-air flea markets. The biggest is located near the Ruins of St Paul’s and haggling is very much expected.
