THEN there were three. Three rounds in which to cement a top four position in your AFL Dream Team league, three to sneak into the top eight or, if things aren’t going so well, three weeks in which to avoid the wooden spoon.As we approach the fantasy footy finals, a dream team coach’s strategy will vary remarkably depending upon where they are on the ladder.
For those comfortably on top of the table in their respective leagues it is time to consolidate.
If they have trades in the bank, they can still trade out under performing mid-rangers for cheap, newly-promoted players like Andrew Hooper (Western Bulldogs, $97,600) and use the extra salary cap space to spend up on a Matthew Boyd ($419,300), Scott Pendlebury ($417,100), Dane Swan ($427,600), or whichever blue chip player they are missing from their side. Those who have six trades or less can probably afford to simply shuffle their sides about with their current cattle and save up for a shot at the flag.
If you are one of those people, then there’s not much advice you need from me anyway.
For the rest of us, locked into a grim battle to survive, it’s a balancing act. Trades are precious, but so are wins.
Here are some basic thoughts.
* Injured players don’t score points: Those under a cloud (like Gary Ablett, Brad Sewell and Alan Didak) have a little band-aid symbol next to their names on the AFL Dream Team website. Be cautious.
* Players don’t score points when their clubs have the bye: If the choice is between a player from an AFL club that has a bye in the next few weeks(Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide), and one who comes from a club that has already had the bye twice (Gold Coast or Collingwood), then go for the latter.
* Multiple position players are worth twice as much: If you have a midfielder-forward in your midfield and another midfielder-forward in your forward line, you can swap their positions without using up a trade. If one is not selected by his AFL club then you can hide him on your bench as a forward OR a midfielder depending on which has the least coverage among your reserve players. Same goes for any designated multi-position players.
* There is no point in having trades in the bank if you fail to make the finals.
* There is little point making finals with no trades left, but it’s better than the alternative.
In the Ballarat Fantasy Football League virtually every match this weekend can shape the make-up of finals in a month’s time.
