Pittsburg Public Library offering computer classes

Pittsburg Public Library will offer several free public computer classes for adults during August.

No registration or sign-up is required. Those with laptops are welcome to bring them to class.

When attendance is high computers may not be available for all participants, but classroom exercises and demonstrations will be projected for easy viewing. During classes, lab computers are unavailable for general use.

Anyone wishing additional information about the computer classes may call the PPL Computer Lab at 620-230-5559. Classes scheduled are as follows:

Everyday E-mail — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 2. This class covers the basics of e-mail, including sending, receiving, forwarding and deleting e-mail. It will also cover sending and receiving attachments such as photos. Library staff can help participants who do not have an e-mail account to set one up.

Microsoft PowerPoint for Beginners — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4. This class covers how to use Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to create slideshow presentations with text, photos, clip art and more.

Microsoft Excel — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 9. This class teaches the basics of Microsoft Excel, including setting up a spreadsheet, entering information and creating simple formulas. Use Excel for bookkeeping, accounting, inventory, address books and more. Those attending should have the ability to use a mouse and keyboard, but beginners are welcome.

Removable Media — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11. This class will show options for saving and transporting computer files such as flash drives, DVDs, CDs and more. Those who own a flash drive are welcome to bring it to class. Flash drives use the USB port of any computer and are a safe way to store a large amount of data.

Introduction to Digital Cameras — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16. Participants will learn to download photos from their digital camera to a computer, and will also be taught how to send a photo as an e-mail attachment. Those who have digital cameras may bring them, but this is not required.

Editing Digital Photos — 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 18. This hands-on class will cover the basics of photo editing using Microsoft Picture Manager. Participants will be taught to crop, edit, remove red eye and more. Several digital photos will be available for participants to work on.

The Senate passed today Fair Minimum Wage Act, H.R. 2 today. The House passed this bill, H.R. 2 and the Senate debated the bill for the past several days. In the process, hundreds of amendments had been introduced on the Senate floor. The Senate floor then agreed to a lot of these amendments. One of these amendments which the Senate had agreed to and passed as Division B of the H.R. 2 is the Immigration Reform bill.
