Former St. John's star John Andreoli enjoying success in Cape League
WAREHAM — It’s impossible for John Andreoli to come up with just one word to describe the last six weeks of his life.“It’s like a continuous dream,” Andreoli said after taking batting practice Wednesday afternoon at Spillane Field, home of the Wareham Gatemen, his team in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Andreoli, the former St. John’s High star from Shrewsbury, recently completed his junior year at the University of Connecticut and helped lead the Huskies to an historic season as they advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time.
A day after UConn knocked off Clemson to win its NCAA Regional, Andreoli was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round. Ten days later, he returned to Wareham, where he played last year as well, and started his summer season on a tear, batting .457 in his first 14 games.
“It’s a long summer,” Andreoli said, “but as of now, I’m happy with how I’ve played so far.”
Andreoli, Wareham’s starting left fielder, lashed an RBI double to left in the fifth inning of the Gatemen’s 6-5 rain-shortened win at Cotuit Wednesday night. He had a crazy five-game stretch earlier this month, during which he went 12 for 19, and he currently leads the team with a .344 batting average.
“He’s having a really good year,” 11th-year Wareham manager Cooper Farris said. “He’s playing really well for us. He was a good player last year, but he’s more consistent this year. He understands what he’s doing a little bit better, and that just comes with maturity as a player. He plays hard every day. He’s been a leader for us.”
The 21-year-old Andreoli, one of nine UConn players drafted, has yet to decide if he will sign with the Cubs or return to UConn for his senior year. He’s hoping his stock may rise a bit this summer.
“(The Cubs) offered me what they believed I was worth, and I thought I was worth maybe a little bit more,” Andreoli said, “and I said I’d give it a go down here and see how the summer plays out. Either way, it’s a win-win for me. I can start my professional career or I can go get my degree and play another great year of UConn baseball.”
This past season was a great one indeed for Andreoli and the Huskies. Andreoli started all 66 games and hit .317.
