Louisa shelter reopens
BY PORTSIA SMITHThe Louisa County Animal Shelter reopened yesterday after virus concerns temporarily closed it earlier this month.
The shelter closed June 10 to address a possible parvovirus outbreak that was believed to have caused the deaths of two puppies there.
Louisa General Services Director Kevin Linhares said veterinarian offices have confirmed that three puppies adopted from the shelter died from the virus, which does not affect humans or cats.
When it closed, Linhares said, the shelter immediately quarantined all dogs so that they could be monitored and observed for any signs of exposure to the virus. New intakes were kept separate from the quarantined dogs, he said.
All dogs, depending on their health, that had not received the parvovirus vaccine were given the shot immediately, he said.
Shelter personnel have also been scrubbing down the facility daily with bleach and disinfectant cleaners to eliminate any possible traces of the virus, Linhares said.
In addition, those who adopted a dog from the shelter in the last six weeks has been contacted by the shelter staff to alert them to the possibility that their dog had been exposed to the virus.
All veterinary offices in the county and in surrounding jurisdictions were notified and asked to call the refuge should all dogs infected with parvovirus be in their facilities, he said.
Since yesterday, Linhares said, none of the dogs that have been quarantined and placed under observation at the county shelter has shown signs or symptoms of having contracted the virus.
"Tests of pressure Parvo, which detect the presence of parvovirus, were administered to puppies and dogs [Monday], and we are pleased to announce that all tests were negative for parvovirus," said Linhares. "Louisa County believes that any potential source of parvovirus is no longer a threat. "
