CBN Disburses N42bn Power, Airline Fund
Sanusi Lamido, CBN Governor
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it has paid out a total of N42 billion under its Power and Airline Intervention Fund (PAIF) as at June 30 2011.
The banking sector regulator disclosed this in a chart titled: “Disbursement under PAIF as at June 30, 2011,” posted on its website Thursday.
THISDAY had last month, exclusively reported that the apex bank had approved a total of N187.17 billion for 21 projects processed by the African Finance Corporation (AFC). Figures had shown that under the PAIF initiative, a total of 30 applications valued at N222.50 billion were received and processed by the technical advisers, the AFC.
But the chart showed that in the month of June, no power firm assessed the fund. It however disclosed that the entire fund given out last month went to eight airlines. The chart did not state the names of the airline companies that benefitted from the sum.
It would be recalled that CBN, was said to have in February this year approved the release of N185.172 billion to the Bank of Industry (BOI) for onward disbursement to the participating banks.
CBN had also in collaboration with other stakeholders made efforts to improve bank lending to the real sector; empower small scale entrepreneurs; create employment opportunities; alleviate poverty; ensure food security; and promote youth entrepreneurship.
In order to achieve these, the CBN initiated a number of schemes and programmes. The apex bank had last year approved the provision of a N500 billion Infrastructure Intervention Fund as part of the Bank's measures to create liquidity and support the development of the real sector of the Nigerian economy.
