<strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | Police car taken for joyride</span></strong></p><p> A man took a Kansas City police cruiser for a brief joyride early Saturday.</p><p> Police responded to a call about a person in need of help at 10th Street and Broadway at 3:52 a.m. and discovered the person was intoxicated. As officers waited for an ambulance to arrive, a man jumped into their Ford Crown Victoria — which was left running with the keys in the ignition — and sped off.</p><p> Police caught the man six minutes later in the 1800 block of Washington Street after he jumped out of the car and ran. </p><p>On Saturday, Jackson County prosecutors charged Alex M. Coomer, 29, of Kansas City, with tampering with a motor vehicle, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">RAYTOWN | Man charged in two shootings</span></strong></p><p>Jackson County prosecutors on Saturday charged Lonzo Echols of Independence with two felony weapon violations stemming from two shooting incidents, one this past Friday and one in February.</p><p>Both incidents occurred at a Raytown apartment building.</p><p>According to court documents, early on the morning of Feb. 10, the resident of an apartment in the 8600 block of Utopia Drive heard a gunshot and then discovered a bullet in his ceiling. </p><p>This occurred just after the resident had a confrontation with Echols, 24, who allegedly had attempted to force his way into the apartment.</p><p>Early Friday, the same apartment resident was awakened by gunshots and then saw bullets coming though one of his windows.</p><p>Authorities soon apprehended Echols after he was seen driving away from the apartment. They found an assault rifle, with an empty magazine, near his car and also counted 18 bullet holes in the apartment.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">OVERLAND PARK | DUI checkpoint</span></strong></p><p> Overland Park police and several other Kansas police agencies arrested eight drivers in a DUI checkpoint late Friday. </p><p> Police said they stopped 724 vehicles and tested 47 drivers for driving under the influence.</p><p> Police also made one drug arrest, one arrest for transporting an open container and five other arrests.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">JEFFERSON COUNTY, KAN. | Perry Lake swimming closed</span></strong></p><p>Officials have closed two swimming beaches at Perry Lake because of concerns about harmful algae in the water.</p><p>The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism announced that they had closed the Perry Park Corps of Engineers Swim Beach and the Perry State Park Beach after testing indicated harmful algae bloom levels. </p><p>Perry Lake is about 17 miles northeast of Topeka, in Jefferson County.</p><p>The agencies said that high levels of toxic blue-green algae had been discovered at the Rock Creek Arm and the Old Town Public Use Area of the lake. The parks, marinas and businesses along the lake remain open, and camping and recreational activities are allowed, authorities said. They said, however, that while boating and fishing may be safe, people should avoid direct contact with the lake water and refrain from swimming, water skiing and wading.</p><p>The drinking water and showers are safe, officials said.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">TOPEKA | Lawrence man drowns while kayaking</span></strong></p><p>Authorities have identified a 36-year-old Lawrence man who drowned while kayaking the Kansas River in Topeka.</p><p>City spokesman David Bevins said Topeka police identified Ryan L. Moore from the license plate on his truck, which was parked near a boat ramp in the Oakland neighborhood.</p><p>Moore’s body was found Friday afternoon in the water, about 300 yards downstream from the weir near the city’s water treatment plant.</p><p>Bevins said plant employees saw a person kayaking near the intake to the water plant and later saw the kayak tumbling in the water.
