Members Fight To Keep Belmont Heights Baptist Church Open
. -&Nbsp;The leaders of one of Nashville's oldest Baptist churches are threatening to close their doors. But some members said they are willing to do whatever it takes to keep Belmont Heights Baptist Church open."It has a very special place in my heart," said long time member Barbara Hall.
She has attended the church her whole life and it's stood for as a place of worship for thousands of people for nearly 100 years.
"The church has been a mainstay in the community for years, and it can should and will be in the future," said member Stephen McLean.
But contention in the congregation is threatening to end the legacy of Belmont Heights Baptist.
Some, including the 34-year-old pastor, said it's time to dissolve the church. But older members said they are confused and can't figure out what's motivating the push to close shop. Their building is owned by Belmont University and the church only pays a dollar a year. The finances are great, and new state of the art renovations, funded by the University, are set to be completed next year.
"I do not understand how such great Christians decide that there is no hope," said Hall.
Pastor Nick Braunschneider told NewsChannel 5 by phone that it is a sad situation and that, "the congregation have done a really bad job of reaching out to our community."
Braunschneider added that the ultimate reason this church should dissolve is that membership at Belmont Heights is the lowest it's been in 50 years.
The congregation is not alone. For the past 5 years straight, membership at Baptist Churches across the country has steadily declined. The question they face now at Belmont: try and stay relevant or just give up?
"There is no reason to give up on the church," said McLean.
The members want to use their new state of the art concert hall that's set to be completed in 2012 and their strategic campus location to recruit younger members and keep Belmont Heights alive.
"It is a plan that seats 1,000 plus people, why not bring them to us, give them a gorgeous place to worship with us, I can't give up I can not lose hope," said Hall.
McLean added, "It's been there for 100 years and it ought to be there for another 100 years."
Braunschneider told us he'd like to see the church stay open, but he also voted to close it during a straw poll discussion last week. He said he'll go along with whatever the congregation decides during a final vote at the end of the month.
